How to Wear a Pencil Skirt

In the fashion world that we live in today, pencil skirts are no longer just for the office working woman. New styles, different cuts, and trendier designs are now making pencil skirts one of the most popular styles of skirts for women of all ages to wear. Back in the day, most women that wore pencil skirts, would wear them only to work, and usually with a matching jacket, so it would give them that “suit” look. Today, there are still many women wearing that exact outfit to work, but then when you step out of the office and into the street, you will find many women wearing a pencil skirt as a fashion statement, or just as a daily comfortable look. Pencil skirts are slim fitting, and give your body shape and style. They usually have a straight and narrow cut, and offer a slit on the back, to make walking and moving around much easier. Wearing a pencil skirt gives your look a touch of class and sophistication, and if you wear it with the right attire, can either give you that professional look or that trendy, sexy, and chic look you are looking for. In this article we will talk about how to wear a pencil skirt. We will cover the basic different styles that are available, how to choose the best one for you, and best of all, how to wear your pencil skirt they way you want to wear it, whether it be for work, or for an everyday chic look.

When it comes to pencil skirts, you will notice that there are many different patterns, cuts, and styles to choose from. Usually most pencil skirts are right below the knee, but you will find some that are above the knee, at the knee, and even a bit of a mini skirt cut. Most of the popular waist lines on pencil skirts are: high waist and natural waist. You can now find some that are low rise, but they are not as popular, as it takes away from the "pencil" look. You will find that most pencil skirts don’t have pockets, but there are many styles that usually offer trouser cut pockets, either on the front or the back. All pencil skirts have a zipper on them, this way they are easier to put on, most of the pencil skirts have their zippers on the back, but some will include them on the side, either way, the zipper is hidden so no one will see it. The most common length on a pencil skirt is around 24 inches, but as stated before, there are many different lengths to choose from. When it comes to fabric, you will find everything from wool, to cotton, to polyester, and everything else in-between. Different styles of pencil skirts include: solid pencil skirts, pinstripe pencil skirts, plaid pencil skirts, striped pencil skirts, sequined pencil skirts, sheer pencil skirts with lining, and many more, usually offered in an array of different colors.

Now that you have an idea of all the different styles of pencil skirts, you have to decide on what style of pencil skirt you want, and it really comes down to two choices: Do you want a pencil skirt for work, or do you want a pencil skirt for an everyday fashion style. If you are looking for a pencil skirt that you will use for work, then you have to stick to a simpler style that will give you that professional look, but with a fashion statement. We would recommend you choose a high waist pencil skirt that is right below the knee, that is either solid or has thin pinstripes. For colors we would stick to either: black, charcoal, latte, light grey, or espresso, as they are neutral shades, and can be matched with many different blouses and shoes. Now, if you are looking for a pencil skirt to wear outside of work, for either school, going out to dinner, shopping, or anything like that, than you can take your pencil skirt to the next level of fashion. We would suggest a length that looks best with your body type, basically, if you are thin and tall, stick to a high waist below the knee cut, if you are heavier and short, we would suggest a natural waist above the knee cut. When it comes to patterns, we would stay away from a solid color, and choose either a plaid print, a striped print, or a glittered design, depending on your occasion.

The whole point of this article was, to teach you on how to wear a pencil skirt, so now we will give you some examples on what to wear with your pencil skirt. Lets say you decided on choosing a pencil skirt to wear at work. We would recommend you wear a high waist charcoal colored pencil skirt, it will offer white thin pinstripes, and fall right below the knee. For your top, you should wear a white ¾ length sleeve button down top, tucked in, and a wide black waist belt. For shoes you can either wear a pair of black rounded toe heels, or a pair of cute black flats. Adding some type of simple fashion jewelry to this look would be great, but just don’t over do it. This look is chic, sexy, and perfect for the office, and if it gets to cold in the office, throw on a cute black cardigan. If wearing a pencil skirt to work was not your thing, and you are looking for an everyday outside of work look, we would suggest a solid black high waist pencil skirt that is cut above the knee, a salmon and white diagonal striped blouse, tucked in, and a pair of gladiator sandals. This look is very simple, yet sexy, classy, and fun, perfect for school, shopping, or just hanging out. If you want a pencil skirt for either a nice dinner, or a night out in the town, we would suggest a high waist charcoal/grey plaid printed pencil skirt, that is just above the knees. For the top you should wear a black solid colored blouse, tucked in, with a thin waist belt. We would add sheer black stockings and a pair of black stilettos. This look is very sexy, classy, chic, and will make you stand out above the crowd.

As you can see, these are just a few examples on how to wear a pencil skirt, and hopefully you got the idea on how to wear a pencil skirt. It‘s all about choosing the occasion, and then dressing it up correctly. Pencil skirts are very sliming, so remember to buy your correct size, because if you buy a size too small, the skirt will look horrible. Always remember to walk slower when you are wearing a pencil skirt, and walk with grace, as you will notice that pencil skirts are narrow and tight, and you cant move as fast, or as well as you could if you were wearing jeans.
