How to be safe online and shop happy

The main concern most of us have when shopping online is, Is it safe? will my credit card # get stolen? will my personal information be sold? truth be told, most of these crimes happen in the real world a lot more than they do on the internet. Sadly, a credit cards guide doesn't just appear on your doorstep, and it is up to you to show discretion when entering your personal information online. One thing is for sure, never, ever enter your social security # when shopping online, it's not needed for anything, so avoid any store asking for it. In this section you will learn everything there is to know about online security and privacy and how to protect yourself and enjoy shopping online with no worries.

Before you place any order, it's great to find out if the store you are about to buy from actually cares about your security, look for their Privacy Policy. Usually the link is found on the bottom of the page. In that section they will let you know what they do with your information after they collect it to process your order. Make sure they don't sell your email address or personal information, such as your name, address and phone number to third parties. Most websites do not do this, but some do and they must post it on their Privacy Policy.

The funny thing is that most of the companies that do sell your personal information to third parties are usually big companies. Most small clothing stores are the best and most secure, they just want to sell you a great product and make you satisfied. Big clothing companies are the ones that like to sell your info to other catalog companies or online stores. Again, make sure to read the privacy policy to make sure your personal information is used only to process your order. With most companies that do sell your info, you are allowed by law to contact them and tell them not to sell your information to any third party and to just use it to process your order.

The concern with your credit card # being stolen seems logic, but online security is at it's best right now. 99% of online store have the best protection for your safety and they seriously take the issue of security. Every time you send them your credit card number and your billing and shipping information, they use the industry-standard Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology to prevent the information from being intercepted. Things to look for to make sure the website you are buying from has (SSL), when your are on the check out page that is asking for your credit card #, look at the web address and make sure it starts with "https", this means it's secure and you are good to go. If they are asking for your credit card # and the web address starts with "http" do not enter any information. You will rarely finds this, but it is good to know.

Another great way to make sure the website you are about to order from is secure, during the check out process, make sure their is a golden lock on the right side of the web address bar, you should be able to click it to see their security certificate and make sure it's not expired. It will also let you know if  it's encrypted (secure) and who the certificate was issued by.

As you can see, entering your credit card # and your personal information can be 100% safe when you shop online, but you have to make sure to check for all these things. It may take longer to buy since you have check all these things, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Make sure to always check all of the above.

One last thing, if your credit card # is stolen, whether it be online or in the real world, if that person uses your credit card without your authorization, all you have to do is contact your bank, let them know, fill out some paper work and you will get whatever money they spent on your card put right back into your account.
